It was a windy, Sunday morning when Dahlia suddenly got the urge to go for a hike. Though she was never truly too busy to do it more often than she already did she found it hard to find the motivation when she knew she would be going up alone. Damian was always working or just simply refused. He had never been the outdoors type and Dahlia didn't know if she wanted to listen to him complain about his hair the entire way there. There were her co-workers however, but as much as they got along she wasn't close enough with them for an invite out on their last day off before work. For months she had used one excuse after another until finally she just gave up, packed a backpack, slipped into hiking gear, and set off for the mountains up north.
When Dahlia arrived she felt a wave of intimidation wash over her as her eyes met the peak of the mountains ahead. Even for an immortal the enormous size was a bit much to take in all at once. She had never been this close to the mountains before and certainly wasn't expecting to see the beauty she's been keeping herself from for no good reason at all. Despite her hesitation at first her fear started to become curiosity and excitement, and after a quick provisions check she trekked up the main dirt path.
Dahlia had spent most of the day exploring and contently so. By dusk she was ready to go home but on her way back she suddenly realized she was lost. Earlier she had unintentionally been guided away from the path by her curiosity and a white tailed bunny that had caught her interest. Although she was happy she had managed to catch the bunny and was able to pet it for a short few before releasing it now she was worried she wouldn't be able to find her way back.
Her hand reached around towards her backpack and swiftly swung it off of her shoulders and set it gently onto the ground. While knelt down she searched for her phone in one of the many zipper sealed pockets but couldn't find it. She searched every pocket twice, and then a third time before realizing it wasn't in there. She thought for a moment to try to remember if she had grabbed it and after a minute of speculation she knew she brought it. While puzzled by the disappearance of her phone she didn't realize the sun was only minutes from setting behind the horizon and her journey to her car was an half an hour long.
Unbeknownst to Dahlia she had in fact brought her phone with her but due to an unnoticed rip in one of her backpack pockets it was located beside a tree a few feet from the dirt path, in the same area she had chased the bunny. While Dahlia tried to figure out what to do -and failing- the sun was setting and making it even harder for Dahlia to find her way back home. After a few minutes of searching around the immediate area she gave up and figured she would return home and ask Damian to help her find it in the morning. She pulled out a flashlight from her backpack and turned it on before making her way towards the same direction she thought she had come from. Within a few minutes however the batteries started to die, and after a few minutes of hitting it Dahlia was left in the darkness.
Dahlia was determined to get home though. She wasn't the type to just sit and wait for rescue, not when she could still walk. That mind frame quickly changed when after an attempt to find her way through the darkness her foot got caught under a uprooted tree root and on her way down her body didn't stay in the same direction as her foot and ultimately broke her left ankle. A scream filled the air, making a group of birds scatter away as if a predator gave them a fright. Dahlia had broken many bones through out her lifetime but that didn't make it hurt any less. Though it wasn't as severe as when she fell off of the tightrope and broke a few ribs in '44, or when her leg was crushed by a adult female elephant in '52, but with no phone, no light, or any knowledge of where she was Dahlia was truly scared for the first time in her life.
Despite the tremendous amounts of pain she was in she attempted to free her foot and was successful but by the time it was free she had used up too much energy so instead of crawling away she propped herself up against a fallen tree and continued to call for help. Hopefully she wasn't as alone as she thought she was.

Essie didn't venture near the mountains often but there was a tree she really loved and it was out of the path of hikers. It was perfect for her current mood and desires. It was all pretty simple actually. She came out there for inspiration when she couldn't get any from anything else around her. Then again, she turned to the outdoors for pretty much everything. Being a nymph, nature was her element. She functioned best out in the open just as she was right then and there.
So after walking around, she ended up climbing up her favorite tree. Once she was perched comfortably on the thickest branch, she took the tiny notebook out of her little backpack-styled purse and wrote. It was really nothing. Mostly randomness in the form of brainstorming. It was her way of processing her thoughts and emotions. Eventually, she actually drifted off to sleep. Her notebook falling on her lap and her pencil falling onto the ground, she was immediately off into Dreamland.
She stayed asleep until she heard the scream nearby. Startled awake but curious, she put her notebook in her bag and swung herself to the ground and looked around. It didn't take long for her to spot the source of the scream. Her curiosity only grew as she walked over to the woman who she could tell was in pain. She looked her over until she figured out where she was hurt and then she got to work without word. Using the tree from which the exposed root sustained she used her ability to get two sticks of equal length and thickness. Kneeling down beside the woman, she offered up a warm smile.
"Sorry, but this might hurt a bit," she said.
She pressed the sticks on either side of the ankle and then held them together with one hand as she used the other to coax a vine to wrap around it all so it would be a secure fit. She severed the vine at a decent length and easily tied it so that it wouldn't fall apart.
"That should do it," she said and rubbed her hands together as she stood up. "I'm Essie."
She smiled and held a hand out to her to her help her stand up.

Just when she was about to give up and save her voice she heard footsteps in the distance. Her eyes grew wide and her head shot in several directions as she tried to figure out which direction it was coming from. "Hello? she called out but received no answer. Panic started to settle in but she knew she had to remain calm. Maybe it wasn't as bad as she thought, maybe it was help. Luckily for her her questions were answered when she saw long blonde hair and a kind face.
A breath of relief escaped from her lungs and a small smile greeted her savior. The curiosity of why this woman was even here in the mountains at this time of night didn't seem to cross her mind amongst the chaos, but she didn't ponder on it for long, figuring the woman could probably say the same about her. She watched as the woman weaved her magic (quite literally) and form two sticks meant to be used as a splint. Dahlia was no stranger to magic or the fact that there were species out there she had never had the pleasure, or displeasure, of meeting, but at first she couldn't tell if what she was seeing was due to the intense amount of pain she was in or if it was something much more real.
"Sorry, but this might hurt a bit," The moment the wood touched her ankle she felt her entire body tense up and bit her bottom lip to fight back the scream. Her eyes closed as she tried to distract herself from the pain with pleasant thoughts and for a brief moment it worked. When she felt the presence beside her stand up her eyes opened and looked up to see a hand. She was hesitant to take it, not because of the stranger but because of the pain she knew she'd feel the moment she put pressure on her foot. Still, she knew she couldn't just sit there all night so with a quick boost of confidence she took the woman's hand and pushed herself up, putting all of her weight onto her other ankle, and when standing used the tree behind her for balance. "Dahlia." she paused for a moment as she tried to get a better footing. She was thankful for her years in the circus. She never realized how useful her tightrope skills were until now.
"Thank you so much for helping. I was beginning to think I was going to have to spend the night here. I deserve it for being so clumsy....and losing my phone. You didn't...by any chance see a black phone laying around on your way here?"

"Nice to meet you, Dahlia," she said brightly.
Essie watched her closely as she seemed to get her footing and listened to what she had to say. She frowned at the mention of a cell phone gone missing. She hadn't seen one, but then again, she really hadn't looked. She was more concerned about the source of the screams and finding it.
"I really didn't look, but I can find it for you easily enough," she said. "Just give me a few minutes. I'll find it and bring it back."
She left Dahlia there to look around. She had no doubt she'd be able to find the phone. She knew her way around trees and shrubs easily enough. It didn't take her long at all to find the phone and it was just a foot from the pen she dropped while she slept up in the tree above. She picked them both up and quickly returned to Dahlia. As soon as she got there, she held out the phone.
"Is this it?" she asked. "It wasn't that far from here."

Before Dahlia could refuse her offer to find it, finding it way too far out of Dahlia's comfort zone to ask a complete stranger to go out of their way to find a piece of plastic. Though Dahlia would gladly do the same for her if the tables were turned she didn't feel it was right to put her out like that. Regardless of what Dahlia's wishes were the girl was out of sight before she could even manage to get a word out.
While she waited she looked around for something to sit on and found a small stump just big enough for her to sit. Dahlia hoped over to the stump, almost falling face forward but just in time managed to reach the stump. And before she knew it she was back. "Oh wow. That was fast. Yeah! That's it. You really didn't have to do that thought...its dangerous out here in the woods. I mean, look at me." she joked as she pointed to her ankle. Though with just a bit of blood her ankle would show nothing more than a scratch in half the time it took without it, Dahlia refused to have any of it. She preferred to stay far away from her predatory nature held deep within so pain was the only option. Luckily for her this wasn't her first break. "I really appreciate the help. Mind if I ask.....why were you here in the middle of the mountains so late?" That wasn't the real question she wanted to ask but she figured she'd start off small.

"It was no problem," she said. "Really."
She looked at her and perched on a low branch as she continued to speak. She bit back a laugh at the comment about the woods being dangerous. She didn't want to offend the girl after only just meeting her. Though she supposed it was true for most people. She was one of the few exceptions, but not because she was one of the "big bads" of the world.
"I really appreciate the help. Mind if I ask.....why were you here in the middle of the mountains so late?"
She tilted her head at the question. It was a legitimate one. It was also an easy one to answer. Well for her anyway.
"Oh, I like to write," she said. "Being out here is one of my favorite spots to think. I fell asleep in a tree. Which isn't uncommon. I kinda end up falling asleep out here a lot. Well, not here usually. I don't generally come this way but there's this tree I like when I'm particularly stuck on something."

"If I fell asleep in a tree my clumsy self would slip right off and head straight towards the ground." She chuckled at the thought. Dahlia had never been one to climb trees, having spent a lot of her time in high places for the circus already so the urge to climb was sedated daily. Though in a different way Dahlia could still relate. If she was having a bad day or stuck on a problem she could always be found some place quiet, whether it was in one of the Ferris wheel seats, convincing the ride owner to let her go up in his off hours, or if it was just simply locking herself in her father's truck and listen to the radio. Now as an adult she didn't have the same places to go to escape but that's why she had come up here so truthfully she couldn't blame Essie for coming up here for the same reason as well.
When her phone was back in her possession she turned the screen on only to see 5% of her battery left. With a sigh she hung her head and brought her hand to her forehead. "Great. Just my luck. Almost dead." She scrolled through her contacts and when she reached Damian pressed the call button but nothing. "What?" She looked at the signal bars and realized there was no signal. "I can't get a signal." She raised the phone up and moved it around to find a signal but with no such luck.

Essie scrunched up her nose a little at the thought of falling out of a tree. It wasn't fun, but she hadn't experienced that since she was little. Being a wood nymph, the hard part was merely getting a feel for each tree and learning them. Now, it was more than second nature to her. She didn't even have to think about the which tree could hold her without manipulation or which branch was most comfortable to rest on. It didn't take long to learn but it was like learning to walk and talk. It took some practice. Then again, a lot of things did.
“It's easier than it looks once you've been doing it for as long as I have,” she admitted.
Despite being closer to a baby in her species, she was old enough. Besides, she had been climbing things since she was three. She climbed her first tree successfully when she was five. She was a hundred fifty years old. That was a lot of tree climbing under her belt. She blinked as the girl spoke again. It wasn't to her, but she felt bad for her.
“I can help you get home if you like,” she offered.

Dahlia didn't like feeling helpless and right now she was just that. With the sigh of defeat she nodded her head in acceptance. "If you don't mind? I would really appreciate it. I don't want to put you out or anything though." It wasn't usually difficult for Dahlia to accept help but when it came to asking a stranger to go out of their way to help her she often times felt awkward for asking. More often than not they accepted but with the few times she wasn't so lucky it was enough to make the Hybrid hesitant to ask for any at all. Slowly she lifted herself off of the stump with her good leg taking all the weight of her body.
"I don't live to far from here actually. Just a mile up the road. I can just have my brother come get the car in the morning." She balanced herself as best as she could, though even with her exceptionally good skills in keeping herself vertical the weight of her body on one leg made her feel like she was going to fall over at any moment. Her hands were stretched out beside her as she made her way slowly through the path with Essie all while thinking How the hell do flamingo's do it?

“It's no problem at all,” she said with a bright smile. “I assure you, I really don't mind.”
She led the way down her usual path where she always parked her car. It wasn't much of a walk and they were at her little Fiat Panda. She opened the back door for Dahlia so she had room to prop her foot up however she wanted and shutting the door for her. She got into the driver's seat and looked at her through the review mirror.
“So just straight up the road this way?” she pointed straight out her windshield.
She knew what Dahlia said. She just wanted to make sure she started off the right way. Essie didn't like to get lost. She didn't mind helping her out though.

Dahlia hopped into the back of the seat with as much caution as she could manage. When she was completely inside she positioned her back against the door and lifted her leg to rest gingerly on the seat. "Yeah. It's a big, white farmhouse to the right. Surrounded by nothing but open land. Can't miss it." She felt a ping of guilt for making a complete stranger go out of her way to make Dahlia comfortable, but it wasn't a deed gone unnoticed, and when she was feeling better and able to walk again she made herself a promise to repay the girl for her troubles.
While they traveled down the road she looked out of the window and into the darkness surrounding the car while keeping an eye out of the house as best as she could. When the headlights hit a bright blue, metal mailbox, reflecting the light bouncing off of it back to their eyes, Dahlia jolted forward and pointed. "There! The blue mailbox with the bird sticking up on top. You can just pull into the driveway. Looks like my brother is still at work. I'll have to call him." She waited until the car came to a complete stop before attempting to climb out of the car herself, unwilling to make Essie put forth any more work than she already has.

Essie saw the mailbox easily enough once Dahlia pointed it out to her. She gave a her a tiny nod and pulled into the driveway and parked. She got out to help the girl automatically. She didn't mind helping others. She really didn't and so it didn't bother her at all about helping her. Essie was just that nice of a person. Helping others was an act that she didn't take much thought on her part. It was closer to an instinctive reaction if anything.
“I can stay and keep you company until he gets here if you like,” she said.
She really didn't really mind. Honestly, if she wasn't working a gig or writing, Essie actually didn't have much to do. It was why she spent the majority of her time alone. It was an odd situation for someone as outgoing as the little nymph. She didn't really like to bother the friends she did have and she was never really home in one place long enough to make friends in other places. She liked to talk to people.

"You really don't have to, but if you would like to stay that would be swell." Dahlia said with a grateful smile. She swung her arm Essie's shoulder for support though she refused to put all of her weight onto her. The pain was still as intense as when she first twisted it but by now most of the discomfort was from the burning sensation she felt with every bob of her foot. Like a flamingo pretending to be a bunny she hopped with her good foot until they reached the door. She reached into her pocket and fished for her keys and with a bit of a struggle managed to swing it open wide so they both could enter together. The door had a large frame and was a striking blue color with three small glass windows positioned at the top. The inside was pitch black. So black there it was almost as if her house was void of any life inside. She reached her hand around the corner and flipped on the switch of life.
They were greeted with shades of peach and cream-like colors with hints of gold. The brass chandelier illuminated the entire room and brought out the soft colors with a vibrant glow. The entry way was small, but cozy with chairs and small pillows, fake plants, and the aroma of fresh baked cookies at grannies. Dahlia made her way into a living room that was similar in color but bigger in size. The couch was long, situated in front of the entry way with the back facing it, two matching chairs on each side and a small wooden coffee table in the center. Across the room was a stone fireplace that looked at least 100 years old, if not older. On it's mantle sat pictures - both old and new - along with figurines of angels and fairies. Dahlia had always had a love for the unique. How could she not be when she was so herself?
She fell back onto the couch and let out a sigh as if she had been waiting for this moment all day. When her moment of pleasure passed she pulled out her phone and dialed her brother. She patiently waited as it rang until it reached the last one. His voice suddenly spoke up on the other end but it wasn't him, it was his voice mail. "Damian. I'm sorry to call you at work, but I had an accident. Don't freak out or anything I'm okay. I had a friend bring me home. But on your way home from work I need you to stop by the park and pick up my car. Call me when you get this." She hung up and set the phone on the counter. "Why don't you let me make us some tea." She didn't want to get up but it was bad etiquette to invite someone into your home and not offer them tea, injury or not.

“I don't mind at all,” she assured her.
She really didn't. Then again it wasn't like she had anything really to do. She liked to be useful though. So she happily helped Dahlia into her house and to the couch. While Dahlia got comfortable and called her brother, Essie took the time to look around the room. She raised an amused eyebrow at the fairy figures here and there. Even though the angels amused her as well, it was the fairies that made her want to giggle. The human image of most things supernatural always amused her, especially since when it came to the fae they were usually wrong. She turned back to Dahlia as she mentioned tea.
“Don't worry about it,” she said. “I'm not much of a tea drinker, and I'm not all that thirsty. You have a really nice house, by the way.”
