It had been about two weeks since Dante moved into the little town of Harper Valley and one and a half weeks since he managed to obtain a job at the dog shelter. He thanked his glowing resume chalk full of volunteer hours at various shelters around the country and the resignation of someone that was moving out of town for his new job. Today was the first day that the young werewolf was being left alone at the shelter to take care of the dogs and he was admittedly nervous. Sure, he had a way with canines that was almost uncanny but on such a large scale and by himself he was setting himself up for anything that might happen.
And that's why he was not surprised when a bird managed to get in through an open door. The incredibly scared animal flitted about, trying to find a way out, and the dogs all began to bark loudly as they jumped up to reach the poor bird. Thankfully, the bird never flew low enough to get caught but Dante also couldn't get the animals to stop barking at it long enough for him to figure how to catch the little guy either. He stood in the middle of the room, practically pulling his hair from his head while he watched the bird fly around. His head had begun to pound from all the noise and he was starting to get mad, something he knew he couldn't allow to happen. He was mere minutes away from calling his new boss and telling her he couldn't handle his first day alone after all.

It was another sunny day in Harper Valley as the hybrid made her way down the street with a bit of pep in her step. Today had gone exceedingly well so far and at this point is seemed like nothing could ruin her good mood. Not even being almost hit with a car who didn’t understand she had the right away. The sound of honking seemed like a distant memory as she rounded the corner and intentionally ignoring the ill-tempered man. If it wasn’t for her passive aggressive nature Dahlia could have easily taught the fellow a lesson or two but violence was never the answer, not with her.
With it being Saturday school wasn’t in session so Dahlia had the entire day to herself. Damian however had to work so that left her bored. A walk through the Town Square felt was just what she needed to burn off the vast amount of energy bottle up inside her. She felt as if she was about to explode being cooped up in the house, and after an hour of aimlessly walking she found herself in front of the dog shelter she occasionally volunteered at, and with a curious thought decided to go inside and greet whoever was working that day.
When she walked in she was immediately greeted with the sound of chirping and barking mixed into one blur of sound. Normally the workers kept a good handle on the animals but something must have happened or there was a new employee. Dahlia quickly made her way towards the back, following the sound as it grew louder and louder until she came across a room with a man standing in its center with a look of panic on his face. Her eyes looked around to assess the situation and when she saw the bird she knew the cause. Licking her lips she prepared them for a whistle, and blew so loud the dogs ceased barking for a moment. ”Looks like you’re having some trouble.” She looked around for an opening, noticing an open window left slightly ajar. ”Let’s try to herd him over to that window. I’ll take the left side if you take the right.” she stood beside him with her hands up in the air and prepared to use her body as a block to deter the bird towards the opposite directions.

Dante was startled by the loud whistle and wasn’t certain if one of the small whines that filled the room for just a second following it were his or not. He was never sure anymore because he had practically resigned himself to being a mutt and sounds like that were known to escape him. After the initial shock wore off he whipped around to look at the woman that had walked in and created the loud whistle that had silenced all the dogs and himself. While she looked for a window he had cocked his head to the side to look at her. She was gorgeous. The kind of gorgeous that made you stumble over your words and look like a complete idiot at the most inconvenient of times. He lost track of where they were for a moment, the world having gone dark around him except for her. During most of his life he had been too focused on one thing or another to be so thrown off by a woman, whether it was baseball or the fact that he could accidentally kill people if he had had a bad day the distractions were aplenty. He had settled in this town, believing that he could control his temper‒though he would still chain himself up on full moons‒and with no baseball or anything to distract him he was awestruck, mesmerized, and plainly blank in the mind.
Then her mouth moved. Words were coming out he guessed. She was speaking to him apparently. He should probably be paying attention to what she was saying so he didn’t seem so dense… Or perverted for staring. His mind accelerated in an instant, it had apparently liked him in this case because it had been paying attention and knew what she had said to him. ”Y-yeah.” he quickly said as he followed her instructions. With her help they had managed to get the bird out the window and the place was now far less exciting than it had been mere moments before. “Thank you for the help… I wasn’t sure what I was going to do.” he said and then he turned around to face her and he forgot what words were again. This was a peculiar power she had over him. “Use your words, Dante!” his brain kicked him back into reality and he managed to speak again. “I’m Dante. It’s a pleasure to meet you, miss.” he said with a smile, a light blush to his cheeks.

Once their task was complete she tossed the rag on a nearby counter, satisfied with their accomplishment. It took them a bit more effort than she had expected but the bird was released, and safe, and that was all that mattered. With the bird out of the room the dogs ceased barking, but paced in their cages, adrenaline from the intruder still coursing through their bodies. It would take them a few minutes to calm down but when they did the pair would be left to the inevitable awkward silence of two people meeting for the first time.
When he broke the silence with introducing himself, Dahlia responded with a smile and a handshake - always having been one to prefer a proper greeting when meeting someone for the first time, believing it to be good etiquette. "Dahlia. And it was no trouble at all. These dogs will jump at just about anything and that bird seemed like it was dead set on teasing the poor pups. I'll give them some treats and they'll be right as rain." She walked over to one of the cub-boards, and before she even opened it the dogs began barking again. The ones who were regulars already knew the contents behind that particular cub-board and knew they were about to get a treat. She grabbed two small treat bags and handed him one. "Give the group over there some of these and I'll get the guys over here." With tails wagging and panting tongues the dogs almost leaped out of their cages when she handed each a handful of treats. "So Dante," She started off as she went down the line, dropping handfuls of treats in each cage. "How long have you been in town? I'm pretty good with faces and I've met just about everyone here. Visiting family?"

Dante accepted the bag of treats and did as he was told, happy it gave him an excuse to not look at her for fear of drool running down his chin. Then she spoke and the sound of her voice filled him with warm fuzzy feelings he was not accustomed to. He had no idea what the hell was going on with him right now. He swallowed the lump in his throat and answered her question, “I uhhh… No. I live in town actually. Ummm… I moved here about two weeks ago. I’ve spent most of my time here or on the baseball diamond helping all the coaches out with their teams when one of them saw my fastball and told the others about it.” He chuckled then realized that last bit sounded like he was bragging, he turned around to face her, “I didn’t mean to sound braggy. I was just… It’s probably the reason you haven’t seen me. I haven’t been around and about the town, just on two places… Three if you count my apartment.” He trailed off and quickly turned around and went back to giving the dogs some treats.
The entire time he has his back to her he was mentally beating himself up over the fact that he couldn’t speak without getting nervous or sounding like an idiot. With all the dogs given their treats he stood there and casually scratched the head of a small terrier mix as she rubbed up against the cage door for attention so he didn’t have to turn around and face the beautiful stranger that made his heart skip a beat. “Thanks again, by the way. I’ve been working here since I moved to town but this was my first day alone and of course something like that would happen. I was worried I’d have to call my boss and she’d have to come help me out.” He admitted as a dachshund in the cage next to the terrier mix required his attention as well, which he willingly gave to him while still petting the other dog.
