The Phoenix were first created by the Titan Cronus. Taking fire from the sun itself he molded it into living beings which he called Phoenixes - his own eternal guard. The lord of time wished for them to guard and keep watch over the time stream; forever watchful of the progress and handling any discrepancies that might arise, but soon Cronus was dethroned and the Phoenix fell into the hands of the Sun God, Helios, as his own form of pet. They were just birds with wings of flames at that point, but eventually were tasked to be the guards of Olympus, giving them new purpose. Though in the hands of a new master they decided to keep watch of their original purpose, but the workings of man and the other creatures of the world became far too interesting so three Phoenixes abandoned their watch and flew to earth wishing to make history instead of just watching it happen. These Phoenixes soon found themselves niches across the world. Bennu of Egypt, Feng Huang of China and Hou-oo of Japan. Still this move did not come without consequence severing their bond with the time stream left them unable to see the future as they once did. They also found that on earth they are forced into a human form and returning to their true bird forms is rather taxing on them because the earth is far less saturated in magic then the realm of Cronus.
Phoenixes, in their humanoid forms, can appear as anyone, though that appearance does not change after rebirth; their age cycle is simply reset again once they die. They also age very slowly with a single life that can last for nearly two centuries. In their shifted form, however, they can range from any color a natural flame can be from red, orange, yellow, or even blue; color is also determined by age as well, and the very first Phoenixes created were in shades of blue. The wings of non-Original phoenixes are always flaming the color that matches their wings while the Original is capable of controlling those flames. The eyes of a Phoenix in their bird form are just like their eyes when experiencing powerful emotions in their humanoid form, colors ranging from gold, red, orange, or or any mix of them.
Most Phoenixes are exceptionally wary of any and all creatures of death, specifically reapers, as they aren't too fond of them. Aside from this, Phoenixes can function just as humans when it comes to emotions and such, though it's common for them to have short tempers and be rather confident.
Phoenixes, even if more than one is found, are normally solitary creatures unless they have a mate or child with them.
A Phoenix's primary strength is their exceptional life cycle. Once a Phoenix 'dies' from some kind of inflicted wound, their body will combust, burning brightly and blindingly to anyone who dares to watch, and turn themselves into ash. From these ashes, they can be reborn, though that speed depends on if the ashes are all in one place. If the ashes were to be displaced for some reason, it would take longer for said phoenix to be reborn. Once reborn, the Phoenix is a vulnerable, newborn baby once more, which is the reason why they need to be near a safe family if it can be helped. One major side effect of this ability is that, when reborn, all memories of former lives are lost until the 'Awakening' begins.
A phoenix, because of their heavy nature with fire, are naturally fire-resistant and can withstand exceptional amounts of heat as well as manipulate fire itself. They can create and bend fire to their will on command, though it's all limited by how old their current life is. If they're younger in their current life, fire manipulation is harder to achieve and takes much more out of them to do.
The tears of a Phoenix have exceptional healing properties, able to even bring people back from the brink of death, but if someone has died, unfortunately, a Phoenix's tears will do nothing for them. These tears are only limited to others, and cannot be used to heal the Phoenix who produced them. These tears that are produced that actually heal are only created during times of extreme sadness or happiness for these mythical birds.
In their bird form, Phoenixes of course, have the ability of flight as well as a sharp, piercing beak and talons as well as any of the other abilities their humanoid form has.
As beings of fire, they are weakened by water greatly in their bird forms and in their humanoid forms, a Phoenix's ability to create fire is severely limited and can even be impossible depending on how wet they are. If the air surrounding them is high in moisture it would also become difficult for the Phoenix to build up a large flame without an outside source.
If the ashes of a phoenix are scattered within a large radius it becomes impossible for the phoenix to be reborn until/unless the ashes are within close enough distance. Keeping a Phoenix's ashes separated will keep the phoenix from returning without actually killing it. If doused in water however the ashes are rendered useless.
Phoenixes are creatures of the sun so on days when the sun is not visible or at night a Phoenix is weaker than normal and is more likely to be killed. Being cut off from the sun for an elongated amount of time will leave them incredibly weak, their fire will die out, their wings will become frail, and their feathers will fade before eventually falling out. They will be reduced to the state of a human if deprived of the sun for long enough at which point they can be killed.
Though they are beings that don't die from conventional means, they are, indeed, able to be killed should their ashes be destroyed or if they are killed using a weapon with that's coated in the blood of one of the Original Phoenix's. A phoenix can die just the same as humans but have the ability to come back; with a price.
Phoenixes can reproduce with any species that has a spark of life with in it excluding vampires. They tend to be attracted to other Fae creatures especially if they are birds or control fire. The only way for a true phoenix to be born is from their respective parents ashes. This is done either through the predecessor living to the extent of their life or just simply ready to carry on the family name. The only other way to accomplish this without the death of the parent is if conceived with another Phoenix during the summer solstice when the sun is at it's highest in the day, but even then the chances of pregnancy are slim. If a phoenix would mate with any other species, the child would turn out to be a full blooded member of the other parent's species but will develop a sensitivity to magic as well as a resistance to warmer temperatures. If the other parent is a Magi the child is prone to developing a fire based power. When Phoenixes do mate, however, they do so for all of their lives, bound until one would meet an unfortunate true death.
Awakening: There is a certain age (around 15 to 35 human years) that Phoenix's regain the memories of their former lives. It starts out with simple dreams or flashbacks of those lives and as they get closer to the 'Awakening', these dreams become more vivid. Their powers can also manifest themselves during this time or even before this sometimes. When the Awakening actually does happen, it's usually a very painful, sudden headache with thousands of years worth of memories coming rushing back into their minds. The process can actually put the Phoenix into a coma if the process is too intense for that current life to withstand. Once the awakening finishes, the knowledge of how to use their abilities is returned to them as well as exactly how they got into the life they have.
