"Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul. And sings the tune without the words and never stops at all." A naïs sat at her desk in the Celestra department of the Sentella Headquarters with her eyes on a sheet of paper littered with typewriter styled font. Her finger tips tapped against the metal desk out of both boredom and habit. She had arrived to work an hour earlier than usual and as soon as she reached her desk began preparing for the day. Today wouldn't be like any other day of translating and typing, it was a day of progress and possibly one that could alter her life forever. For the last few weeks she has been demanding to the high ranking officials for a change in scenery that only a field agent would acquire. Anaïs could not complain about the comfort and familiarity of her desk, she actually preferred to stay out of the line of fire and chose to contribute to the fight with science instead, but her personal goals of learning all she could about the lycanthrope's was limited in her current position and she knew the only way was hands on learning. Unfortunately for her becoming a field agent required training and today was day one. As she waited for her mentor she went over any notes she thought she might need. Anaïs had a tendency to read everything in sight when she was nervous and her previous day's work seemed to be the current center of attention. She had no idea who was assigned to her or when they would show up, but as patient as she was waiting for her mentor she also wished he or she would hurry the hell up. |

Savitar came into the room about ten minutes later, wearing a pair of black workout shorts and a matching black sleeveless t-shirt. His eyes fell on Anaïs and he gave her a quick once over, assessing her to try to determine exactly what to possibly expect out of her. He continued his way over to her.
"What exactly do you know about weres?" he asked briskly.
He actually helped train a lot, especially lately. Sadly, it was causing him to lose patience quickly with his students. Then again that wasn't his fault. If his bosses wanted to send him people as green as fresh cut grass, he wasn't responsible for snapping at their stupidity. For once he wanted to teach someone that wasn't just there because they thought their desk job was boring.
As he waited for her to answer, he headed to the mini fridge and pooled out a bottle of water for himself. His routine usually consisted of working out in the mornings. After that, he normally took up a seat behind his laptop and tried to find were activity he should check out. At night he patrolled for much the same reason. When he was training new field recruits, however, he usually had to skip computer time.

"Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul. And sings the tune without the words and never stops at all." A naïs’s thoughts were interrupted by a question that had stunned her for a moment. She looked up from her paper to see a somewhat familiar face. They never worked together before this and had never officially introduced themselves to each other, but there was the occasional glance and smile when they passed out of politeness. But she did that with everyone. She was also the one that went over everyone’s reports and out of them all his were hard to forget. Or read. She wasn’t speechless at first because of his question but by his sudden appearance. It was as if he had came out of nowhere, or she was just concentrating on her paper more than she thought. ”A good bit.” she said confidently. ”Enough to know how to not get killed. I read a lot.” Anaïs hadn’t encountered a werewolf face to face, atleast not that shes aware of, since that night in the woods but she felt she was more prepared now than she ever was. She thought so anyways. ”What exactly do you know about teaching?” she asked curiously, knowing him enough to know it wasn’t his usual routine to train newbies in the field as he was more in intelligence himself. She wondered what he had done to get himself into this and mentally laughed at the most humorous scenario. |

Sav made a rude noise as he heard her confident reply. In his experience, "a good bit" wasn't good enough. Reading a how-to book didn't save your life. Brutal experience did, and he had no sympathy for anyone who believed otherwise. He certainly wasn't going to humor any of that nonsense.
”What exactly do you know about teaching?”
"I know you can't learn a damn thing from those books you claim to have read," he said. "I know that if I were a were, you could have been dead by now. Probably would have."
To prove his point --- and without warning --- he took a crossbow and shot it straight at her. He aimed it just right so that it would barely graze her. Granted, she had to stay still for it not to actually hit her. He set the crossbow down and eyed her for a moment before he closed the distance between them.
"The speed of that bolt is the same length of time it takes for a were to tear into you," he said. "Forget the books, because they're wrong. If you want to be out in the field, books won't help you. They will not save you, because they don't know shit. They're not the ones who lived through it."
His tone was brutal in its honesty from the beginning, but on that last sentence, it turned downright cold as memories ripped through him. The memories he hated most of all assaulted him just at that one simple statement. He clenched his fists but said nothing more.

"Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul. And sings the tune without the words and never stops at all." A naïs didn't even have time to process what was going on when she felt a sting hit her cheek. Out of instinct she jumped from the shock and luckily for her only after the arrow was already past her. If she had moved to the right just another inch she could have been done for. A burning rage built up in her, her hand balling up into a fist and her knuckles became white from her grip. The nerve he had for shooting at her, and to only prove a point he didn't even need proving. Anaïs wasn't like the other female desk employee's that had spent their entire lives without ever coming across a Were until they joined the department - if they were even so lucky. She had real experience with creatures of the moon, and though she was unprepared and had barely escaped with her life, she believed she was more capable at handling herself than anyone here. Her nose constantly in a book on the subject wasn’t without purpose however. It wasn’t fueled by a school girl fascination that could only be obtained safely by books, but because she had questions that needed answers she at first believed could be found by various accounts, only to come up short, and because she wanted to know how she had escaped that night without being bitten and if possible how to do it again if need be. That’s partly where he came in as even if she had all her answers it didn’t change the fact she didn’t know how to fight. But before they even had a chance to begin he had already begun to make her regret her request. She knew he wasn’t aware of her history but the thought didn’t bring any comfort or ease the urge to punch him in the face. Instead she opted to fill him in on her thoughts before she was forced to leave the building with him. ”You must not read very often because I’ve always found their statements to be quite helpful. And who’s to say that some of them weren’t written by people who have had personal encounters?” She didn’t know why she was defending the countless books she’s read as he was more accurate than she let on. With supernaturals only coming out a few years ago most of the old accounts are fueled more by belief then fact. Still it wasn’t unlike Anaïs to not cover all her bases before moving to Plan B and with a snarl she looked right at it. She stood up, hand on her cheek but her eyes firm to his. ”As someone who’s lived it. And survived.” Her voice turned cold but it would soon pass. ”I’m going to go clean up and then we can go. That’s if you don’t try to prove another point on my way out.” she said with sarcasm before walking off and into the girls bathroom. After a minute she walked back out and immediately sought him out. |

Savitar listened to her rant and rave at him and fought for control of his temper. She had no idea what she was talking about. She certainly didn't know him. Why did the idiots he had to train always think that they had it worse than everyone. He was trying to show them how to survive. They always had to fight him too. Yes, he knew he wasn't easy to get along with. He knew his lot in life wasn't as bad as others. That wasn't his problem. His problem was others thinking that it couldn't get worse. It could. It always could. He wasn't there to pamper them and cater to her whimsical need for action. He was there to make sure she didn't get killed or turned.
He didn't stop her from leaving to clean up. In fact, he barely noticed her leave. He was thinking back to his first encounter with a werebear. Granted he knew what his father was from the day he was born, but he never saw his father turn. That is until he was about six. His parents had a fight and didn't know he was in the house. He saw his father turn for that first time. He had been terrified, but his mom barely flinched. Throwing wolfsbane at him, she ran for the basement and locked herself up in the cell that kept them safe from the old man on the full moons. Sav hid in the closet, terrified. That was back when his father loved him. Before he realized his only child was human.
"We're not going out in the field," he said when he saw she returned. "Not today. And thanks, for throwing the survival story my way. You're not the only one to face your first were and survive. Guess what? I lived with mine. So how about you stop thinking you know everything and accept the fact that learning is going to take a little more time. I'm not going to throw a field rookie in the path of a rogue were just because you got lucky once. Guess what? You probably won't be that lucky again."

"Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul. And sings the tune without the words and never stops at all." S he knew when she came back to expect a load of bullshit from him but she didn't expect him to want to continue teaching her. Okay, maybe want wasn't the right term but he obviously had something to gain from teaching her if he didn't just give up then. Whether it was more money or simply making the head of the department happy -as no one wanted to get on his bad side as it usually resulted in termination- she decided to bite her tongue, swallow her pride, and take it as is. "Fine. You're right." It almost physically hurt to admit that but it was out. She immediately wanted to take it back the second she said it but she wasn't a witch so going back in time was out of the question. He was right though. She didn’t actually know if she would be so lucky next time. That’s why he was here and in the end she was grateful for it in a way. He didn’t have to do this but he was willing enough to try it seemed. While caught up in defending her ego she had lost sight of the real reason she was here but his bluntness pulled her back. She wouldn’t regret admitting the urge to hit him was still present though. ”Alright. So what are we going to do then?” she folded her arms, quite curious as to what he had planned. |

Sav never expected her to admit he was right out loud. He honestly hadn't been looking for the verbal confirmation. It didn't matter to him. He knew he was right. He merely wanted her to accept the fact he knew what he was talking about. He didn't make a big deal about it, figuring it took a chunk out of her pride. Instead, he merely acknowledged it with a simple nod.
”Alright. So what are we going to do then?”
He studied her for a moment before he walked over to her. There was a method to his madness. She was about to learn exactly why he was such a hard ass right off the bat. There was reason he didn't try being liked. It wasn't only to keep people from getting too close. It was because it made what he was about to tell her to do easier for her to do. Some people shirked from giving their all when they didn't have the necessary desire to take him up on the offer.
"First, you're going to hit me," he said with an easy smirk.
He stood there with his hands at his back as he waited for her to comply. This was how he did things. He knew she probably wanted to and he didn't mind letting her hit him instead of dummy. First off, it would likely relieve some of the frustration she had because of him. Second, he would know exactly what he had to work with for hand-to-hand combat. It was better than using a dummy, even if it were unconventional.

"Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul. And sings the tune without the words and never stops at all." W hen he told her to hit him she couldn't help but hold her breath in shock, eyes widening with the hint of confusion. It took her a moment to realize she didn't dream it but still, even through her confusion, the temptation to follow his orders rose inside her like a burning flame. The idea excited, and scared, her. This could be pay back for almost killing her. If only the punishment matched the deed. So was this a test? Well of course it was, but was it a test of her physical strength or inner strength? Usually Anais was a master at tests but for the first time in her life she was baffled by one. "What? R-right here?" She asked as she looked around, and though she only saw but one or two people pass by she still didn't want an passerby getting the wrong idea and report her. Her eyes returned back to focus on him and noticed his stance. He was actually serious wasn't he? The fear of him throwing a fast one at her crossed her mind but she knew if she was going to learn how to fight, she had to start somewhere. Clenching her fist she assessed where she wanted to hit him. Naturally anything below the belt was off limits. Hitting a guy there wasn’t only unfair, but just plain rude. The gut or face would do –but which one? With a clenched fist she threw all of her weight into the air and landed a blow to the gut. The moment her fist made contact she felt a weight lift off of her and immediately felt a release of pent up anger from moments ago wash away into nothingness. Content with her hit she pulled away, a smug smile plastered on her face from her achievement. |

Sav was ready for the punch but the force was pleasantly surprising. More times than not, when he had his trainees hit him they either played their skill down so that they could avoid the possibility of consequences for attacking a co-worker. If they weren't downplaying, they just sucked. Anais was contradiction to the norm, which was a mark in her favor. He actually doubled over from the impact for a mere moment before straightening up to look at her.
“Not bad,” he said. “Have you taken self-defense classes? Or just read a book?”
The last question was asked with a lightness to his tone that could almost be considered teasing. He rarely showed a sense of humor, but he was starting to think she might actually know more than even she realized. He liked potential. It put him in a good mood. It was a good thing for her. It meant her training would likely be easy to swallow rather than the grueling hell he gave the majority of his students.
“Here's another question,” he said. “What do you know about the other supernatural beings outside the weres?”
The common mistake rookie field agents made was that they assumed that they only needed to be prepared for werecreature attacks. The problem with that was that the world didn't world didn't play fair like that. Once a hunter was out in the field, they were fair game for everything else that was out there. They had to be prepared for everything no matter their specialty.

"Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul. And sings the tune without the words and never stops at all." "H aha. Very funny." She rolled her eyes as she picked up on his teasing. So maybe he did have a sense of humor. She did have to admit though, for someone who has only ever punched her pillow -and regrettably a piece of drywall when she was in college, shattering some of the bones in her hand- she felt like she actually got in a good hit. Like she would ever be lucky a second time. Even if it was the last time she felt it was enough. Besides, she didn't want to take advantage of this opportunity. His second question, as simple as it was, threw her off for a second time. She had never really considered looking into the other species before, most likely because of her obsession with learning more about her past. Though he didn't have to tell her right out, she knew why he asked and it was suddenly made clear to her that she wasn't as prepared as she thought she was. "Umm. I'm going to guess it would be bad if I said nothing..." She gulped, both mad at herself and worried he may use it as fuel to tease her more, or even refuse helping her all together. "I just know a few things about vampires from old horror novels and movies. Bram Stoker, Nosferatu...the classics. Though...from the look on your face I'm also going to assume they are nothing like the real thing." Suddenly her once confident feeling washed away like a waterfall of uncertainty. "I'm sorry but the undead just isn't really my cup of tea. Though, I am somewhat familiar with witches. Again, mostly from cinema but it can't really be that different, right?" |

He couldn't say he expected her to actually know about the other species. He wasn't surprised at all to find that she only knew about the weres. It wasn't necessary for those working in the offices to only focus on their division. None usually started looking into the supernaturals that weren't their specialties until they wanted to start going out into the field. He actually was just happy she was honest and not trying to pretend she knew it all.
“Okay, so you know Hollywood at least,” he said. “They didn't get too much wrong with vampires and weres in form of weaknesses. Like werecreatures, vampires aren't exactly like you see in the movies or read in the books. Sun and wooden stakes to the heart kill and weaken vampires just the same as wolfsbane and silver do to weres. Witches, far as I can tell, aren't so lucky in fiction. Only thing they get right is the spellcasting and making potions. Iron is the key to taking them down.”
Sav pulled a flash drive out and held it out for her to take. He wasn't a fan of reading published things based on vampires and other supernaturals, but the flash drive was full of truths. He should know everything on it was from his personal experiences. It was probably one of the few things that could legitimately be trusted.
“Read the logs and watch the videos,” he told her. “I try to keep these up to date and easy to follow but once you're on the field division doesn't matter. You will run into the other supernaturals and probably have defend yourself or some innocent victim. They're usually fast and strong and hunters don't usually work in pairs so back up is not usually an option. The files in there should be detailed enough to give you something to think about, but this time don't rely on what you read. Chances are I most likely skipped some descriptive details. The video clips are mostly from security cameras and the quality isn't always the best but there are some that I actually recorded myself that are a little easier to see. Each video is paired with one of the logs and are pretty much numbered as such. Should give you an idea of what field work actually is. It's not nearly enough, but it's a quick way to get you up to speed on the basics."
