Alex laid face down on her white fitted sheets, burying her body under the matching comforter. Tonight was the night she had planned to spend catching up on the most recently published comics she had just bought the previous day but her plans were interrupted by a dinner she didn't even want to go to. As founder and leader of a hit man group Andrei was a man with many connections and often times had to attend formal dinners in order to keep business running smoothly, and as his progeny it was her 'responsibility' -as he clearly stated when he presented the invitation to her- to attend with him. As much as she disagreed with him she knew fighting him on it was pointless; but that didn't mean she had to be happy about it.
In fact, Alex didn't know the first thing about dinner parties or entertaining people. Her entire life was spent locked up in her room with nothing but her comics, computers, and her thoughts. She was so clueless she didn't even know what attire was required for such an event. Luckily for her she had an aunt that was the complete opposite, and as much to her dismay for the first time since meeting the woman she let her dress her for the night.
When Anya was done Alex looked into the mirror and at first didn't recognize herself. Her blonde hair was set in loose waves that hadn't touched her shoulders for longer than a few minutes for years. Alex always felt more comfortable with her hair up in a loose bun and the feeling of it down felt unnatural to her. Still, with one look at her fitted, leopard printed dress her insecurities about her hair washed away and was replaced with the beginning spark of confidence. Now with her new look she was more excited for the party than when originally told about it but when she remembered she actually had to talk her nerves returned as quickly as they had left. Unfortunately Alex didn't have enough time to back out before Andrei called her to go.
The whole ride there Alex sat silent. Silence between Andrei and Alex wasn't uncommon but it didn't help her nerves either. When they finally arrived Alex was hesitant to step out and only managed to do so when Andrei threatened to pull her out of the car himself if she hadn't. While mumbling under her breath she followed Andrei inside and upstairs towards the party. Just before entering she looked down at her phone and set a timer for an hour from now. She set the ringer to the same as her mom's in the hopes she could fool Andrei and the others that her sudden departure was an emergency. Satisfied about her plan she tucked her phone back into her small clutch and stepped inside behind Andrei, completely unaware that not everyone in the room was a total stranger. Outfit

Bar tenders and servers ran around hectically while the made drinks or delivered food. They fidgeted with vests, loosened ties, and readjusted cuffs at a frantic pace. Clearly, none of them were comfortable here in a room of people that could kill them in the blink of an eye and admittedly it was a little nerve wracking serving human blood to people when you knew they probably would have preferred it straight from your neck instead. However, Evander was calm as he slowly straightened his cuffs perfectly and tightened his neck tie while his shift began. He remained so with each order, charming women and men into laughs and delightful conversations. People pleasing was his forté, his crooked smile and dashing politeness proof of that.
But he would be lying if he didn't admit why he was so comfortable. Unlike his very stressed coworkers, Evander could escape if suddenly someone deciding his vein looked more appetizing than the glass he placed in front of him or if someone saw him flirting with their mate. So with a devil-may-care attitude he flirted his way through each thirsty customer, laughing off inappropriate subject changes because he had brought it upon himself, and was tipped handsomely for his service. And whenever one member of the staff seemed to be fidgeting too much he would tell them to go take a break and he would end up covering a larger portion of the bar, somehow managing to keep his cool the whole time.

While Andrei was greeted by the host Alex went unnoticed. Using this as her chance for escape she slipped away unannounced in search for the one thing that would calm her nerves; food. Being a plus one meant no one really knew she was there, or cared, and she preferred it that way. She was only here because Andrei made her and she still was trying to figure out the reason why. She wasn't a part of his hitman organization and gladly so and most people in the city weren't even aware of their connection. The only other plausible reason would be to torture the newborn and so far it was working.
As she made her way around the room she looked around for the food table. Little did she know that most of the guests were vampires so anything other than alcohol and blood was obsolete. She did manage to find the bar area and opted for a drink instead. She sat down at one of the empty stools, choosing the seat at the end of the bar and the furthest from the other guests. When she tried to order a glass of blood the waiter taking her order seemed to be more focused on his attire than her, making the vampire slightly agitated. When she realized she wasn’t going to get her drink any time soon she stood up and prepared to leave in search of another way to calm her nerves, even if she had to compel someone to give it to her.

Evander flipped a martini shaker of his shoulder and caught it with his other hand behind his back before pouring its contents into a glass. He smiled at the young women before he handed the glass over with a wink. He was a show off and he wasn't afraid to admit it, especially when it elicited giggles like the ones he just received for his impressive bar trick. Out of the corner of his eye he noticed one of the bartenders was too preoccupied with pulling at his clothing to notice the angry customers in front of him. With a sigh Evander excused himself from the young ladies that were amused by him to go help the poor idiot down the bar out. "Go take a break. I don't want to see one hand on that tie when you get back." he gave a quick warning before he stepped up to take orders.
He looked up and saw someone leaving so he acted quickly, brushing his finger tips over Alex's hand to grab her attention and then he began to fill the orders being shouted at him by people relieved to finally have some service. "Sorry about my coworker, doll. I swear I'll pay attention to your needs." he said to her with a grin as he slid a high ball glass of scotch and a martini glass of blood to their respective owners. "What can I get you?" he asked her without looking up from the Cosmo he had started making.

Doll. The four letter, one syllable magic word she hadn't heard since high school. And to top it all off the voice was the same as she had remembered. As if it was instinct her nerves once again returned and the fear that came with socialization hit her like a ton of bricks. Alex didn't even need to turn around to know who it was that touched her hand. The goosebumps that ran up her arm and the hairs that stood on end gave it away. For the first time tonight, and most likely not the last, she mentally cursed her vampire senses for their heightened sensitivity, but at the same time became enthralled by the feeling his touch gave her. When she managed to actually turn her head she forced a smile and sat down. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad after all.
"What can I get you?" Was the million dollar question. When she first decided to order something off the menu she opted for something more suited for her species. But now the game has changed and the embarrassment she often felt with drink human blood now came at a higher price. Was she willing to pay it? Hell no. "A beer, please." she said softly, as if hesitant to ask. She still couldn't get over the fact her high school crush was standing right in front of her, making her a drink....at a vampire party. Just by her presence alone she knew he was well aware of what she was now. The realization didn't come soon enough and now she had to make a choice. Book it and forget she ever saw him and hope he forgets too or stick it out and see what happens. She wasn't even sure if he managed to see her before moving onto the couple a few seats down. The more she thought about it the less she was able to convince herself she even had a choice. It had seemed her body wanted her there and planted on that bar stool was where she stayed.

Evander had moved on to making a few drinks while the girl he had stopped seemed to be mulling it over. He hadn't even realized who was in front of him until he had finished with all the people the previous bartender had kept waiting and then he finally looked up at her as he poured her the on tap beer. "Well if it isn't the genius that bested me in high school." he said with a grin as he set the glass down in front of her and began to wipe off the bar with a rag. "Long time no see. What's my favorite techie been up to?" he asked, playing off how happy he was to see her.
He would probably never admit the feelings he had for her, which seemed to resurface upon seeing her, unless the situation called for it. He was also busy assessing if she was here alone or if she had a date close by. The single beer had tipped him off that she was alone but he didn't want to assume anything either. Admittedly, he was honestly just glad that she was even here to begin with. It had been a long time since they had last interacted and then he remembered how that one went so he quickly slung the tag over his shoulder and made sure he was standing somewhere where the air wouldn't carry his scent towards her but he also didn't think that was a sign of avoidance. "It's nice to see you, doll." he added with a genuine happy-to-see-you smile as opposed to his usual flirty grin.

First sentence in and she could already feel her cheeks burning hot from embarrassment as the blood she had just before arriving filled her face. Damn her and her binge drinking during nervous situations. It was almost as if she had set herself up for it. She lowered her head in an attempt to hide it but any attempt she made was useless. The damage was done and there was no hiding it now. When he set down the beer it was almost as if her prayers had been answered, and in one swift motion she gripped the handle and took in a large gulp. Using it as both a way to stall as well as a self motivator she took another large gulp before setting it down and wiped her mouth with a napkin.
"Nothing really." she cleared her throat as she set the beer down and slowly built up the courage to look up at him, only get sucked in even further by his charming smile. It was hard enough to even look at him to telling him the true answer to his question was out of the question. "I start school again in a few days. Other than that just trying to survive." What is wrong with you? she thought to herself as she mentally punched herself in the face. "It's nice to see you too" Her smile grew wider but it was mostly because his was so persuasive. "How...how did you get a job here?" she asked curiously.

Evander watched her take a large full of her beer down with a bemused smile. He never really understood nervousness, except that one time he didn't like talking about, so clearly that didn't matter. He was pleased when her smile grew though and that was enough for him "I work part time for the company hired for the bar service. I'm their best bartender under pressure so they asked me to work for the evening to keep these flustered bunch in check. They need it. Think they are getting the hang of it though." he looked down the bar to see customers were actually being taken care of and that ties and cuffs were hardly being adjusted so he was good with it. He quickly tugged at his vest to straighten it and looked back at her before he went back to making drinks, this time pouring tequila shots in a line for the group of guys a few seats down. "So you took some time off of school? I'm surprised by that. I figured you'd have a masters by now. You went back for a Ph. D, didn't you smarty pants?" he asked, obviously kidding and it was rhetorical, "I'm kidding. Though I am surprised you took time off. Life get crazy on you?" he questioned as he put tequila shots, salt, chasers, and glasses of blood on a tray and set it down in front of the guys.
Just then the guy he had sent off came back looking much less anxious and Evander stepped back with a surprised grin. "Hold that thought and come outside with me? I'm due for a break since these guys look like they can handle it for little bit but I don't want to quit talking either." he asked, kind of hesitantly because he was setting himself up for possible rejection.

Alex didn't even bother to look down at the other bartenders as he did. She didn't care. He was too gorgeous to look elsewhere and his adjusting of his clothes only made him even cuter. If it wasn't for him mentioning her life her mood would have been at its most uplifted this evening so far but alas now she was plagued with answering questions she didn't really want to answer. There was no real way of telling him without coming off as either weird or depressing. She decided to dwell on the more pleasant questions about school before he halted the conversation. When the offer of switching settings, and to a secluded one at that, she felt her body tense before going numb. She didn’t know if she was entirely ready for such a big step. She remembered their last encounter and though she had abruptly, and rudely, ended it with her sinuses she could remember the feelings she had when she realized they were alone. Now being a vampire only ensured her fate to end up looking like a fool in his eyes, her heightened senses showing her nervousness more clearly. But somehow, as always, his voice soothed her and with that alone she was swept up by his wings and trapped in his spell. ”I’d love to.” she smiled widely, almost too happy at the offer and it showed but she didn’t care. Just as long as he kept talking to her she’d walk off the balcony and to the cliffs below just outside if he asked her to.

Alex accepting his offer made his grin return, this time one of pure joy. He grabbed a bottle of champagne from behind the bar and nodded his head to the end of the bar for her to meet him there. He was incredibly ecstatic as he walked out from behind the bar and grabbed her hand when she met him there. He pointed to where he was taking her–a glass door not far from them that lead to a balcony were employees were intended to take their breaks–and winked before squeezing her hand and heading outside. He may have been a little more quick and forceful than he had intended but he was giddy like a child on Christmas.
Once he the door to the balcony had closed behind them he let her go and stepped away, realizing he might trigger an allergy attack. He stood downwind from her, mentally cursing his plight, before offering her a small smile. He dreaded this ending the way it had last time they had been alone. He might just give up if that happened. "Sorry if I dragged you out here, doll." he liked calling her that. With her it meant something while with other girls it was meant to name them swoon and giggle. He didn't want to make Alex swoon or giggle, he just wanted to spend time with her and get to know the girl behind the techie. Now he finally had that chance but only if he was careful. In a celebratory mood for seeing her he popped open the bottle of champagne he had, launching the cork off into the darkness, and held it out to her. "Would you like some?"

Before she stood up she looked around for Andrei. She wasn't entirely sure how he would take it if he knew she would be alone with Evan but part of her didn't care. Still she wanted to make sure he wasn't keeping an eye on her and when she saw he was too distracted to notice she made her way down to the end of the bar. When he grabbed her hand the butterflies returned. Twice in one night was highly unexpected and frankly she didn't know how much more she could take before fainting from the euphoria. She didn't even mind his forceful pull towards the doors and outside into the dry, warm air. Every moment they spent hand in hand Alex felt like she was in a sleepless dream, one of which she never wanted to wake from, so when they parted she was saddened with the possibility it may never happen again. ”It’s okay.” she said with a smile before jolting back as the cork flew off into the distance. ”Sure.” She took the bottle and looked at its contents before taking a sip, her eyes widening in surprise as she handed it back to him. ”Wow...that tastes...expensive.” she laughed, wiping her bottom lip with her finger before licking the left over champagne off her finger. ”And surprisingly really good. Fruity. I’d buy it. How much is a bottle like that...50, 100 dollars?”

Evander hadn't really looked at the label of the bottle he had picked up so her comments had him searching the label in the darkness. He moved to use the light pouring out from the inside to see it, "Oh wow... That's expensive. Ah well, it's already paid for and already been sipped from so might as well." he took a quick sip and handed it back to her. "Try around eight hundred by the way... And this actually isn't the most expensive champagne I've served either. Probably isn't the most expensive here knowing the people here. Let's not tell anyone about this." he shrugged.
Just then the wind blew right past him and went in Alex's direction. Evander's eyes grew wide and he practically leapt so he was no longer downwind from her with a frightened look "Shit. Fuck. Shit. Alex, are you okay? You're not going to stop breathing on me, right? I was so careful!" his face was full of concern as he made sure to stand away from her. "Please tell me I didn't mess it up again." he begged, talking to himself that time.

Alex giggled inside as she took the bottle from him. First she was alone with the guy she’s been in love with since high school and now they shared a secret no one else knew. As innocent and child-like as it may have seemed she felt giggly like a fan girl at the thought. She didn’t even care that the bottle was more than she had made in…well…a year and a half now. Even if someone did find out they wouldn’t know who took it but if they did she knew Andrei could pay for it. The question was, would he? Caught up in her own excitement she was taken by surprise when he suddenly jumped and started to freak out as if something she clearly couldn’t see just happened. She looked at him confused. ”What?” The fear on his face appeared genuine and after a second of thinking about it everything seemed to click into place. ”Oh that? I’m fine! Relax! I’m not going to die on you...not that I actually could…” she trailed off at the end, ending in a muffled tone. ”I’m not allergic anymore. Well, I don’t think I am anyways. I don’t feel like an attack is coming on….” she paused, sniffing the air. ”Nope. Nothing. Though something...smells...really nice.” The smell was almost overwhelming, but in a good way. She hadn’t really noticed it before but whatever was causing the intoxicating smell radiating off of him - much like his body heat warming her cool face - began to make her mouth water and throat dry. Before she could lose herself to his scent she pulled away and shook her head. ”Y-you said you didn’t want to mess it up again. What do you mean?”

Evander breathed out a loud sigh of relief when she said she was fine, "Oh, thank god..." he muttered as he leaned over to regulate his breathing from the mini panic attack he had just had. He stood back up and reached for the bottle, when it was passed to him he took a really large gulp from it and then set it down on the balcony railing. "You used to be allergic to birds and I kinda smell like one and you can never be too careful..." he explained about his sudden overreaction when the wind blew.
That was when he realized what she had asked and his mouth went dry. "oh fuck..." he thought as he swallowed the lump that had formed in his throat. He decided to be honest, "Remember that day in the library when we were alone? Oh course you probably don't. That would be silly to assume..." he looked down awkwardly before be continued, "I tried to ask you out and then the air kicked on and blew passed me... You had an allergic reaction and fled and I basically avoided you like the plague after that... I have spent all night making sure I was not upwind from you so that you'd be okay but I fucked that up and I am so glad you're no longer allergic to me." he ended on another sigh of relief.

His words hit her like a ton of bricks. Did he really just say what she thought he did? At first the shock made it difficult for her mind to wrap around it and for a split second she felt like she was going crazy. Maybe she was. Maybe the alcohol was getting to her. But Alex knew she wasn’t drunk, lucid, or even hard at hearing. In fact she was the complete opposite as her hearing was as sharp as her memory. Despite his assumption Alex did remember their last encounter details included. She remembered he was about to ask her something before she felt an asthma attack come on. She had never forgiven herself for that day, thinking it was completely her fault she ruined the one time she got to talk to her crush. His distance after that only proved her fears valid but now, with his reassurance, she felt a weight has been lifted off her chest only to be replaced with the feeling of complete joy.
She couldn’t believe it. Her long time crush actually admitted to having thoughts of asking her out. As excited as she was her insecurities made sure to surface and brought forth questions that would now plague her for the rest of the night; why me and why now? ”Wow. That’s a lot to take in.” she said, too baffled to find the words. In an attempt to calm her spiking nerves she reached out for the bottle he set on the railing but instead of grabbing it her hand brushed against it, knocking it off the balcony as she was too busy looking at him to pay attention. The sound of the glass sliding against the iron caught her attention and just before the bottle fell past the point of no return, with lightning speed she caught it in her hand. Gripping the bottle tight as to make sure it didn’t make a second attempt at escape she brought the bottle closer to her, taking a large gulp before handing it to him. ”Is what you say true? You actually…..liked me?” The very thought brought butterflies to her stomach.
