By the way, I’m Alex. He smiled at her, a genuine smile of someone who had the makings of friendship. Running off from the security guard who was trying, and failing, to explain what happened to him, even though he didn't fully understand, into his walkie made Nykolae feel like a rebellious teenager. Something he'd never gotten the chance to experience. And surprisingly, he found comfort in Alex's presence. He hadn't made many friends over the years, especially vampires and it suddenly hit him that he'd forgotten that particular tid bit. As they ran, he managed to look over at her. She was smiling and free. Not once had she made a move to bit him or torture him as every vampire he'd come into contact with, did. He eyed the spot where her gun was and felt a jolt of excitement. To top it all off, they shared a passion.
When they were far enough away from campus, Nykolae reached out and touched her arm as he stopped, stopping to take a breather, a smile still on his face. What a fat idiot! Campus security always thought themselves as cops but in truth, they were just laxy SOB's that had failed cop school and could only get jobs as security guards. They took school jobs because it made them feel powerful to boss around those younger than them. Glenn, or whatever his name was, was one of those kinds of security guards. FInally, when he was able to catch his breath, he turned back to Alex, his smile growing larger. "Teach you?" he teased. "Hell, I don't even know how I do it myself. Whenever I touch a certain gun, it's like I instantly learn everything about it, how to take it apart, it's weak points, how it shoots or if it needs cleaned. Just so happened, I've handled that very same gun before so I was able to dismantle it without having to go through the process." he let out a laugh that caught the attention of some tourists as they walked by. "That'll leave that stupid fat dude lost for words for a month!" He leaned his back against the wall of the building they'd stopped in front of, watching a limo pull up and someone rich or famous stepped out, a babe in each arm as they entered the casino.
His smile faded from his face as he remembered his time was limited out here. He wouldn't be surprised if dumb or dumber didn't round the next corner, tackle him to the ground like some convict and drag him home like a bad puppy. Without looking at Alex, he spoke, his stomach twisting into weird feelings. "Tell me, Alex. Why haven't you felt the need to feed from me?" Sure, it was an odd question, especially to someone who wasn't linked into the thoughts in his head but the question was genuine. Had she ever realized he was only a hybrid? The way Kaia had made it sound, his blood was irresistible to vampires, whether outside the body or not. He had assumed, for weeks now, that that was the main reason she had held him captive, his blood but with Alex, he was beginning to have second thoughts. He needed to know why.

As a vampire their quick escape showed no effect on Alex and when they came to a halt she looked back at him unscathed as he tried to catch his breath. She missed having working lungs, though they were still technically there she no longer needed them. Now they were just something that reminded her she was once human and could no longer return to that state ever again. ”Like a superhuman ability.” And there was the geek. Countless years of reading comic books is the cause of her third obsession behind technology and weapons; super powers. The possibility to have a supernatural ability was fascinating to her despite being supernatural herself. Having known about vampires at an early age her own inherited abilities weren’t as interesting as his, or Clark Kent (her favorite male superhero). Little did she know she had one of her own, all she needed was the right incentive to let it out. "Tell me, Alex. Why haven't you felt the need to feed from me?" Alex tilted her head in confusion. ”What? Am I supposed to?” And then it hit her. She had assumed he was a vampire and in the commotion never really bothered to pay attention to what he was, and was too busy with finding out who he was. Now that he wasn’t enclosed in a room filled with freshly drawn human blood she finally took a moment to take in his scent. She smelled...human? And vampire. Now she was confused. His curiosity now made sense and by letting herself become open to his scent suddenly she was overwhelmed with the intoxicating aroma. Why hadn’t she noticed it before? Despite the gentle thought of giving into her instincts and attacking to sedate the growing hunger within her, she actually didn’t really feel like she wanted to. The urge just wasn’t strong enough yet. Though she was smart enough to figure out he was a hybrid of some sort she had no knowledge of the properties his blood possessed, nor did she need it as she had a ring to elevate the stress of burning in the sun thanks to Kaia. ”This got weird fast. Are you expecting me to? Because let’s get one thing clear now, I don’t feed from people. Not my thing. I was born in the 21st century so I’m perfectly content with sticking to the blood bank thank you very much.” She looked around to assess where they were, something the pair had been doing quite often lately. ”I’m hungry.” she said as she looked back at him. ”In the mood for cow?”

Nykolae's frowned deepend. So what was Kaia's true reason for keeping him if it wasn't his blood? She still had yet to yell him the real reason, let alone, why he was dragged unceremoniously from his own home. She could have done that to any hybrid if she was just hungry. He had no reason to distrust Alex's words because she had no reason to lie to him. She had clearly smelled the human blood back on campus and had come to investigate but she had made no move towards him. These new revelations only increased his hatred but, now wasn't the time to vent his anger. Instead, he turned his full attention back on Alex and laughed, shaking his head. "No, I wouldn't expect you to. Just curious. Seems information I was given was somewhat false." He would never let Kaia drink from him again. Fine, if he was to be her play thing, he would make her work for it. He wasn't some walking refrigerator for whenever she needed something exotic.
"Cow?" he echoed, scrunching his face. "That sounds disgusting. You drink animal blood?" He laughed and grabbed her hand, ready to take her somewhere, eyes dancing. "You need some real excitement! Come on! You're a full blooded vampire! Imagine the possibilities of drinking fresh human blood! Imagine the things you could do, the power you could feel!" He reached around her, patting the gun, his arm grazing her waist. "The little trick you want me to teach you? Fresh human blood opens up so many talents you didn't know you had. It would be so easy to teach you! What are you afraid of?"

Her eyes looked down at the first sign of physical contact. What was with this guy and touching? If that wasn't enough to leave her flustered the mention off human blood certainly did the job. Confusion set in as she listened to his words, both from the sudden shift from animal to human as well as his sudden interest in getting her to give into her vampiric instincts. Perhaps there had been a part in her approach that brought forth the misunderstanding. And an awkward one at that. The very topic left a sour taste in her mouth that only human food could fix. Alex could begin to feel herself grow angry and as much as she hated to admit it her anger wasn't aimed towards him, but herself. She hated herself for even considering anything he had said. It went against everything she stood for and yet, the idea off being powerful was intoxicating. His words enticed her and almost successfully so but his final question reminded her exactly why she hadn't considered it before; she was scared to kill. Her eyes darted back down when she felt his other hand brush against her waist, the feeling of nervousness one gets when confronted by a crush overwhelming her. She slid her hand out of his grip out of panic and tucked her fingers into her front pants pockets. "I was talking about cheeseburgers..." Her voice trailed off as she felt the conversation had grown even more awkward. "Your version of excitement is vastly different than mine. And though you hold a compelling argument, I'll put it to you like this, I'm not really the kind of person that takes death very well. When I'm hungry I don't stop until I'm full. And when it comes to feeding from a person I have a lot more at risk than staining my shirt." Her shoulders lifted slightly in a shrug. "Even if I wanted to I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I couldn't stop. Besides, I'm perfectly content with being half as talented as I could be." She lied and knew it. She's been lying to herself ever since realizing she was no longer normal and the thought alone often times saddened her. "Listen, there's a diner down the street that makes some of the best fries in town and I'm getting hungry. If you want to join me I'm cool with that, but if you do could you do me a favor and at least try to not eat or sleep with everyone there?"

Their situation quickly turned awkward and Nykolae was thankful for the commotion around them. He quickly looked away from her to watch the crowds, mostly tourists today. The limo that had brought the hot shot had long disappeared to be replaced by a line of expensive sedans with blacked out windows. Vegas was truly a place both crime and peace could run together and not ruin a day. Instinctively, he reached for his back pocket, where, before he'd been taken by Kaia, he'd always kept his wallet. But when he'd been dragged from his home, he hadn't been given the option to grab any belongings. That included grabbing his wallet that had the key to the train station box that held all the money he'd ever received in his lifetime. Nykolae wouldn't say he was rich, but he was certainly much better off than even some of the wealthiest upper class.
He sighed, letting his hand fall from his pocket. "Well, a cheeseburger does sound nice and I'm currently broke." No doubt, his locked box had been broken into, or worse, repossessed by the train station and the money probably stolen by a bad employee or donated to charity. He guessed it was a good thing he was immortal. He'd have to get more money in order to survive. When she mentioned feeding, he finally turned back to look at her, one eyebrow raised in confusion. "Really? You're more concerned about petty things than a good meal? Seriously, what are you concerned about? Killing someone?" Nykolae remembered the first time he'd killed his victim. At first, he'd been terrified as he was sure most vampires were. But when he realized that the woman he killed had been nothing and he'd actually given her an escape from her abusive husband, he felt better. She had even managed to give him something before she'd died; a good meal. Surprisingly, killing humans didn't come often to Nykolae. Part of that was probably because he got bored when they stopped fighting back and let them go. Lucky for them, it was just before they were drained dry. He didn't know how other vampires were able to stop but it had come quite easily for him.
"That's normally why I just take the free meal. Tastes better, anyway." Even as he spoke, the smell of a diner just down the block wafted towards them and he wasn't surprised to find that the smell didn't entice him. What did, however, was the couple who had stopped beside them to take pictures of the casino across the street. As they moved off, arm in arm, Nykolae got an idea. He turned back to her with a smile. "I got an idea." He lifted his wrist to his mouth and used his fangs to pierce his flesh, remembering what had happened in Kaia's office when he'd done it the first time. He showed her his exposed wrist, a line of blood running down the side. "I've just drank fresh human blood, plus, I'm half human myself. Do this and I'll teach you that thing with the guns." he extended his arm towards her. Part of him was just simply curious to her reaction. She seemed almost terrified at the thought of drinking human blood and a vampire not drinking straight from the source amused him but the other part of him had actually enjoyed the last time Kaia had drank from him. Not that he'd tell her this but he wanted to experience it again.

His ignorance to the fact that killing was wrong felt like an itch she just couldn’t scratch. Was every vampire like this? He wasn’t even a full vampire and yet he only proved her previous theories correct. As someone who claims to be anothers pet he sure didn’t have a problem causing others pain himself. Alex understood what it felt like to be taken advantage of by force, to have no choice but to feel the life being drained from you like an oversized leech attached at the neck and no matter how much you struggle it just wasn’t enough. Alex was once one of those girls Nykolae had so eagerly taken as a ‘prize’, as he so claimed, and though she wasn’t raped her blood wasn’t spared. Now, as the very thing that caused her early death to begin with she wasn’t so keen on becoming the very monster she had come to fear. For a brief moment her attention was pulled towards a couple who had stopped beside them. For a moment she was back in her happy place. She admired their appreciation for each other’s company, the excitement in their eyes at the prospect of new adventures, and found satisfaction in seeing them simply happy and in love. However the smell of blood snapped her eyes away and as if instinct fell directly on the source. Her eyes fixated on his wrist like a predator targeting its prey. From blue to crimson red her eyes changed, the skin under her eyes thinning as to let small, dark veins extend downwards like roots from a tree. She didn’t give herself enough time to extend her fangs before she turned her back to him and covered her mouth. In a panic she rushed back into the alley they had came out of, but not without grabbing his arm and dragging him with her. Part of her wanted to tear into his flesh and consume his life force until she became numb with his blood, the other half just wanted to punch him in the face. Maybe she would. ”What is wrong with you?” she said with her back still turned. ”You can’t just go biting yourself and sticking your blood in my face.” Slowly she turned to face him as she managed to finally revert her eyes back to normal, though only partially so a red outer ring remained around her hazel eyes. ”Do you have a death wish? Or just really enjoy fucking with me? I told you I can’t control myself! And what if someone had seen that?” she growled and suddenly, like before, she felt as if her heart was about to explode from her chest.

As soon as her face changed, Nykolae felt a jolt and a healed reminder burned on his neck from where Kaia had bit him and he instantly felt concerned. I told you I can’t control myself! And what if someone had seen that? Would she have attacked him, drained him dry and moved onto the next victim? Nykolae had had a brief spell of uncontrolled hunger but he hadn't been able to do much damage, considering he'd been an infant. He'd been pulled from his mother's hemorrhaging body, covered in blood and hadn't been able to stop feeding since. All attempts at wet nurses failed miserably and finally, one wet nurse who valued her life, came up with the ingenious plan of putting cow's blood into a baby bottle. It seemed to sooth him as a child but when he was set free from the orphanage, had yet another spell of attacking young human girls, no longer able to consume animal blood. He quickly learned to control himself because of the physical damage from others in his village when they caught him feeding. He'd also quickly learned how to be discreet and eventually, his disgusting habit became unknown to the villagers. He hadn't had anyone to help him struggle but by using his own body, he had the possibility of helping her control herself. It was all a matter of distraction...
But she was clearly too shaken by this sudden outburst, he decided to let it go for now. "You're right. I'm sorry. Go grab yourself a cheeseburger. I had made a promise to you on campus that if you didn't tell Andrei, I'd leave you in peace and yet, you still stuck around to get me off campus. I probably should be leaving you know." He hated to leave. He couldn't explain it. He didn't feel any sexual attraction to her, though, he wouldn't turn down an advance but he felt a bond with her that he didn't want to end here. It was the first time he felt as though he had a true friend but he didn't want her to be around when Kaia sent for him because he had a feeling it wouldn't be pretty. And if she knew Andrei, there was no doubt she knew Kaia and would put the pieces together.

Slowly Alex managed to hold back the feeling of wanting to rip into his wrist but her irritation was quickly replaced with guilt. Even though she stopped herself from attacking him, something that would have been much worse, now she felt she had hurt him still, on an emotional level. Alex didn't know who this guy was, his history, or the reason for why he did certain things but the look on his face reminded her of herself in some ways. She could tell he wasn’t entirely thrilled with parting ways and neither was she. His reason however was still a mystery and the thought of an ulterior motive crossed her mind, but like a sad puppy caught in a storm Alex couldn’t help but give in and bring the wet puppy in from the rain. She sighed. "It's okay. Come with me. I don't really like eating alone. It'll be my treat." Her hand reached around and slipped into her back pocket and pulled out a crisp 100 dollar bill. "I swiped this from Andrei's wallet. I'm sure he won’t notice. He's got a ton more." she held up the money in between her fingers with a smile. Despite everything he had done she didn't want to just walk away from him and go on about her night, not yet. And how could she? There were still questions she needed answered and the prospect of a possible new friend made her want to remain in his company even more. ”Come on.” she nodded in the direction she began to lead him towards, not waiting or looking back to see if he was following, though she hoped he did.

Just who was she to Andrei to be able to swipe a hundred dollar bill from his wallet without his noticing? Clearly someone he trusted very much and clearly someone he didn't want to upset. It sounded like if she was in any trouble, she'd run to him in a heartbeat. He would have to watch his actions from now on. His and Andrei's relationship was sort of rocky to begin with. Neither really had any reason to associate except for the connection with Kaia. Even though he'd promised to leave her alone if she didn't tell Andrei about meeting her or what he'd done at campus, she was still inviting him along for a bite to eat, even offering to pay for him. He felt himself smiling as he fell instep beside her, stuffing his hands into his pockets. Because of the human blood he'd consumed only an hour ago, the wound he'd inflicted on his wrist had already healed up. It had been a while since he'd had human food. It wasn't like he couldn't eat it he just preferred blood and it filled him up enough that he didn't need to search out other sustenance.
The diner was only half full considering most of the tourist wandering around Vegas were doing just that, wandering around Vegas. Nykolae found them a booth and slid in, the plastic of the booth feeling a little sticky to the touch as if a three year old had gotten ice cream all over the seat and the hostess had only hastily wiped it up with a dirty rag. Though he didn't come right out and promise not to eat everyone in the diner, he did make a mental note to not embarrass her. But when the waitress approached the table, he hated his silent promise. She was, in every way, his type with blonde hair and a sense of innocence about her that made him want to tie her down and hear her scram. When she smiled at him, he felt a sudden urge of hunger and he quickly looked away. "I'll take a cheeseburger, a little on the raw side." he said, not even waiting for her to ask.

When they walked in they were welcomed by the vast array of scents that screamed of a fat man’s paradise. Despite losing the ability to use food as a source of nutrition it was still something Alex enjoyed to no end. The mouth feel was incredible and her heightened senses only made everything she ate taste ten times better. Naturally she would have to resort back to blood later tonight but for right now she wanted to feel human. They weren’t here for even a minute and he already seemed to be in distress from something. The waitress’s flirtatious smile gave it away and then she understood. She rolled her eyes slightly, not caring if Nykolae or the waitress noticed and forced a smile while she placed her order. ”I’ll have the same, side of curly fries. Oh, well done please.” Alex’s smile remained stationary and as did her eyes on the female waitress as she walked away and around the corner, not looking back at Nykolae until she was out of sight. ”Seriously? Is it like…impossible for you to be around a blonde female without getting flustered? And you were the one trying to teach me about control.” She relaxed in her seat and gave him a glare a brother would hate. The question of how he had met Andrei and how he knew of her connection to him still plagued her mind and finally she couldn’t hold it back any longer. ”How did you know I knew Andrei. Or an Andrei for that matter? Is there something I should know? Seeing as I’m supposed to not mention you to him. I’d like to know why.” Alex still kept to her promise to never mention their interaction together but she still wanted to know. She felt he owed her that much.

He frowned at her disappointing look. "It's not so much control more than it is being turned on, if you really want to know. I have control. Over five hundred years of it. It's just-" he sighed. No point explaining to her. She wouldn't understand. No one seemed to understand the hole left in his soul when his father had died, taking away their only connection that had made him who he was and further more, no one understood his need to fill the hole in his soul, if only temporarily by using women. The brief affection he gained from such encounters was what he craved, though he'd never tell anyone. He didn't even care if they weren't real feelings. It was just that sudden need to feel like he belonged somewhere that kept him coming back for more.
He was grateful for her subject change, even if it was in a direction he also didn't want to talk about. "You smell like him." He said absently, leaning one arm on the back of the booth while the other remained on the table as he absently played with the wrapped of his straw. "Just figured someone who smelled like him would be important to him. So far, I haven't seen otherwise. Although, I haven't been able to place your relationship with him, considering I don't know him well enough myself. I just know he dared to feed me when Kaia had been keeping me starved-" He abruptly stopped, eyes widening. Shit! He'd said too much! Fuck! He looked away from her. If she knew Andrei, she was bound to know Kaia. The woman was powerful enough. Was it anger or embarrassment he felt? He guessed it was a bit of both; anger at showing his weakness of being "enslaved" and embarrassed because he was basically a plaything and there was nothing he could about it. He was, hopefully, saved from answering questions when the waitress returned with their food and Nykolae quickly tore into the cheeseburger. Animal blood was just about disgusting to him but it was enough to stave off of the feelings of hunger he felt from being turned on.

She quickly regretting mentioning anything as the topic made her both nervous and uncomfortable. Being a virgin didn't make her oblivious to the subject but the very thought played on her insecurities. She shook it off, thankful she had changed the direction of their conversation into something she could better control. She was taken by surprise however at the mention of a name she hadn't heard since she was first turned. She waited for the waitress to leave before saying anything, ignoring her food. "Kaia?" She looked at him with at puzzled look as she leaned forward, resting her arms on the table. "The woman you're staying with is Kaia?" She half-heartedly laughed. "And andrei was actually nice to you? Wow...she must have put you in pretty bad shape for him to feel sorry for you. You're not even family." Her smile faded as memories of his kindness towards her resurfaced and it didn't seem like innocent humor anymore. "Andrei turned me because he found me in bad shape as well. Sophomore year at the University...the first time I attended, I was taken for my blood and once they found no use for me anymore they left me to die. Andrei, with that blood hound nose of his, found me. No one else could but he did. Just in time too. He couldn't save me completely but he gave me a second chance if I wanted it. At first I didn't want it but then I realized I'd hurt the people I care about. My family. Including andrei." a small smile cracked through and she looked down at her hands. "I mean he's not just my sire now...but my actual family. He actually managed to keep track of his sisters children all the way down to me. Can you believe that? That's dedication." she shook her head as she realized she was rambling. "I'm sorry...I'm rambling." She didn't know why she suddenly opened up to him. Maybe it was because she could relate and wanted him to know he wasn't alone. Either way the rant was actually quite relaxing and for once she actually felt better after getting it off her chest.

He felt a stab in his gut at her mention of family. Not that the matter had ever concerned him before. He guessed it was just the very idea that Andrei had followed her bloodline all the way to her. His own father hadn't even come back to see if he even existed and his own mother's parents had disowned her, writing her off as a whore and he, the son of the devil. He'd been entirely alone his whole life and it had made him who he was today. He had no Sire and he certainly had no nest to return to. Hearing the wistfulness in her voice as she talked about Andrei being family, he actually felt a little envious but masked it well as he finished off his cheeseburger and lathered his french fries in ketchup. The last time he'd eaten human food, it had been long before fast food was even a conceivable idea. It would never taste as good as blood but he supposed it did work to slack of some of his hunger.
"Don't worry about it." he said mildly. "Everyone has their own beginning story and they are all interesting to hear. At least I know my thoughts about you and Andrei were rather accurate. Although, the initial meeting was a tragedy." Finally, he turned his eyes on her and stopped shoveling food into his mouth. "What do you mean taken for your blood? You mean, a vampire held you prisoner?" The thought really wasn't that hard for Nykolae to fathom. Every vampire he'd come across had been nothing but assholes. They had either wanted to drain him dry or kill him, which, if he lumped them altogether, they all had wanted to kill him. He felt a rising anger and wanted to find the assholes she referred to.

In the midst of sharing her entire life story she had forgotten the real reason they were there. Without hesitation she grabbed her burger and stuffed one side into her mouth, taking a rather large bite and looked at him as she chewed. It was obvious by the expression on his face that telling him about certain aspects of her past bothered him. To what extent she wasn’t sure of but she made a mental note not to bring it up again. It seemed to hurt him when the topic of family was being thrown around but when he became concerned about her kidnapping she couldn’t contain a small smile after swallowing her food. The idea that he actually cared warmed her soul. They had only met less than an hour ago and already he seemed to be showing signs that only an overly protective older brother would convey. If anyone would understand how she felt it would be him and that alone was enough to allow her to open up to a complete stranger. She didn’t know why but something about him made her feel comfortable, that she could tell him anything and he would understand. Having spent her entire life alone she found real comfort in this and in fact, felt a little overjoyed at the prospect of having a new friend. She let out a small sigh before speaking. ”Yeah. Apparently I was bunking with a Magi and when I borrowed her jacket, I guess her scent was on it so they thought I was some kind of witch. I guess Magi blood is really valuable or whatever or else they wouldn’t have taken me. When they found out I was just some normal girl they kept me anyways. Andrei made an example out of all of them though…I highly doubt anyone made it out of there intact.” She paused as a wave if nausea hit her purely from the thought. ”I’m sorry, can we talk about something else?” she asked with a pained look on her face before shoving a handful of fries into her mouth. Just then the young, blonde haired waitress returned with the same smile and mischievous eyes as before. ”Is the food and everything to your liking?” The waitress asked politely, quickly turning her attention to Nykolae without hesitation, ignoring Alex almost completely. Though silent, Alex’s eyes narrowed up at the waitress and gave her of a look of irritation and confusion.

At first, Nykolae had done his best to ignore the waitress, even going as far as to look irritated at her interruption. But it was when she leaned in towards him, eyes sparkling with mischief, that Nykolae got the first whiff of her. To Alex, it would appear as though her rather low hanging shirt had caught his attention but it truth, Nykolae was drawn to the corpse like smell she carried with her. Completely repulsed, he pushed his food away and glared at her. "I think we'd like our check now, actually." he said, moving his body in a way that indicated he wanted to leave.
But the waitress didn't move. Instead, her smile grew wider and Nykolae's suspicions were confirmed. "Oh, you won't have to worry about your check. In fact, it's been paid in full because you were leaving in a hurry." With lightening fast speed, she reached out and grabbed his wrist. Instantly, where she touched, his skin turned black and Nykolae yelled out in pain. Just as quick, he fought back, swinging his hips around till his feet were free from the table and he kicked her in the stomach, sending her flying backwards, her hand releasing him. Nykolae didn't hesitate. He grabbed Alex's hand and yanked her out from behind the table and towards the door. Behind them, the waitress shrieked and was already back on her feet. Nykolae's heart pounded in his chest. Who the fuck was this bitch and why wasn't his wrist healing?! He looked down at it as they burst from the restaurant and out onto the busy sidewalk .It was still black and dead looking and he had absolutely no feeling. He could still move it but it felt stiff. Shit He was in trouble. He'd never smelled anyone like her before, let alone heard of any supernatural creature that could cause skin to turn black.
